State Guard & State Defense Force (SDF) Collection

Nearly half of the states across the nation maintain their own State Guard or State Defense Force (SDF) organizations—uniformed volunteer forces that support their state in times of emergency, disaster, or national crisis. These forces are legally authorized under Title 32 of the United States Code, which allows each state to maintain its own military forces, separate from the National Guard.

The tradition of state defense forces stretches back centuries, rooted in the early militias that defended communities during the Revolutionary War, Civil War, and both World Wars. When the National Guard was mobilized for overseas service, state defense forces remained behind to provide security, disaster response, and continuity of service at home.

Today, these organizations continue that proud legacy. From assisting in hurricanes and wildfires, to providing medical, communications, engineering, and security support, state guards stand ready to serve their fellow citizens.
